Acetal / POM filament
POM filament, also known as acetal filament, is manufactured by Ensinger under the product name TECAFIL POM-C natural. This POM filament is based on the polymer polyoxymethylene as copolymer, which is why it is specified as POM-C. It is categorised as an engineering filament as well as polyamides are. In contrast to POM-H (homopolymer), POM-C filament offers the advantage that the melting point is lower, it has a higher abrasion resistance and higher impact strength.
Parts made from this POM 3D printer filament are heat resistant to 100°C (continuous operating temperature) and can withstand low temperatures to -40°C. Overall, POM filament is known for its chemical resistance and good hydrolysis resistance up to approx. 60°C. A low moisture absorption, as well as high dimensional stability and excellent toughness (even in the low temperature range) ensure that acetal filament is also suitable for printing parts in contact with water, for example in outdoor applications. The only limitations are in terms of UV resistance. A very low coefficient of friction and high abrasion resistance make POM a suitable material for sliding applications such as rails or bearing bushes and the use in the field of mechanical engineering in general.
POM is one of the most widely used plastics in the food and packaging industry. It is therefore also in great demand as food safe 3D filament. Therefore this 3D printing material is a food grade filament, declaring conformity to regulations (EC) No 1935/2004, (EU) No 10/2011 and (EC) No 2023/2006 including a FDA statement of conformity on raw materials.
What should be taken into account when POM 3D printing, is that the temperature does not exceed 240°C under any circumstances, as the filament can burn and release dangerous formaldehyde at the same time. POM filament tends to warpage due to the semi crystallinity. Therefore we recommend a high heated printing bed and chamber temperature.
