PEKK filament
Ensinger manufactures an unfilled PEKK filament - TECAFIL PEKK natural. PEKK (Polyetherketoneketone) is part of the group of PAEK filaments and thus makes it one of the strongest natural filaments in the market. Ensinger's PEKK filament is based on 6000 series of ARKEMA Kepstan® resin. PEKK filament becomes more and more popular in additive manufacturing because it can be printed amorphous and is considered to be easier to process than PEEK. PEKK filament is often used for the replacement of metal components whenever optimisations in terms of lightweight but still keeping strength are required.
The characteristics of PEKK plastics as e.g. excellent flame resistance and low smoke emission allow to realise crucial industrial applications for aerospace and transportation. Good electrical insulation properties result in frequent use of PEKK filament in the electronics sector. A lot of applications within chemical, medical or bioprocessing are also made of PEKK as it shows good chemical resistance against e.g. acids, alcohols or ether.
Why print our PEKK filament ?
Some semi-crystalline or amorphous materials have problems with diffusion in between layers or with trans layer crystallization. Printing PEKK filament is optimised for 3D printing by its polymer structure and - especially the 6000 series - for a slower crystallization rate and a high flow grade. This leads to enhanced layer adhesion of your printed applications.
Using the structure of a copolymer it is possible to have precise control on melting point and crystallization rate when printing PEKK filament.
Printed PEKK components can operate continuously at temperatures from 250°C to 260°C, the short-term load is up to 300°C. Since PEKK is a high-performance material, it can only be used on an industrial printer that complies with the recommended process parameter. The printing and part properties can be influenced by the printing parameters and post processing. It is easier to print PEKK in an amorphous condition and post anneal to increase crystallinity and material characteristics.
