The demand for food safe 3D printing material is growing. We notice this by the increased search and requests for FDA approved filament and compliance to EU 10/2011. This is not surprising, because 3D printing offers freedom of design, enables the design of complex parts in small quantities and is nevertheless economical. This makes 3D printing particularly suitable for spare parts or customised applications in the food industry.

Parts that are intended for food contact should comply with local regulations. As a globally operating manufacturer of high-performance plastics, we supply many food grade materials for the food industry that are used in e.g. components for filling, mixing and portioning systems as well as plant and machinery for meat, fish and poultry processing, bearing bushes and gears.

In many cases, plastics can replace metals or ceramics. With the new design possibilities of 3D printing, alternatives are being explored to implement also new structural solutions for technical applications. Therefore we have expanded our portfolio to food safe 3D printer filament.

Food grade 3D printer filament / FDA approved filament

Food grade filament is not an official term, but in the engineering field it is usually understood to mean that a material is approved for food contact. For this purpose there are regulations that define the requirements for such materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. The main objective of EU and US regulations is to ensure that no damage is caused by the migration of substances. Therefore meeting the requirements of the European regulations for food contact and the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is a key requirement for manufacturer of thermoplastics in this sector.

For our food grade filaments we declare conformity to regulations (EC) No 1935/2004, (EU) No 10/2011 partially with migration results and (EC) No 2023/2006 including a FDA statement of conformity on raw materials.
